About Me

I live on the ocean, write women's fiction, love to read so much that it's an addiction rather than a hobby (I read an average of a book a day). I live on the wet west coast so it's a good thing that I like to walk in the rain.

Deja vu all over again

I know, I know, it's a corny title for the blog but I couldn't help myself.

I saw Deja Vu over the weekend with my friend Patrick. Just to give you a little background, Patrick and I have together seen two of the worst movies ever - and I like most movies. We saw Solaris and The Fountain - both with very similar themes (a love that can't be that goes on forever) - and disliked them both.

So when I said, "let's see Deja Vu", I didn't realize that the theme (true love at first sight that can't work) was the same as the two earlier movies. We almost turned around and changed our tickets for something else - but we stuck it out and were glad we did.

I loved it. I love romances, I love action flicks, I love time travel. Oh, yeah, and I love Denzel Washington and Val Kilmer. And New Orleans. The plot is a bit complicated, especially for people who don't read science fiction or keep up with the latest theories on time travel. I do both, so I didn't have any trouble following it, but even with that small flaw, the movie is fast paced, the characters are interesting, the time travel almost makes sense.

It's an action film, so you have to be prepared for violence - and it's there, in spades - but for me, the character studies and the quietness of some of the scenes around it makes it worthwhile. It's set in post-Katrina New Orleans but doesn't shy away from the devastation. The huge devastation to the city is a subtle counterpoint to the violence of this particular story.

I'll see the movie again when it comes out on DVD - I'm sure there are things I missed - in particular some of the small grace notes of the minor characters - while I was following the twists and turns of the plot. It'll be easier to see those things the second time around.

I was going to go see "The Fountain" just out of respect for the director's previous flicks like "Requiem for a Dream," but I couldn't bring myself to do it .. i'm glad to hear i didn't miss anything
