We had snow in Vancouver on Saturday - more than unusual in November as our snow season is generally January and February - and it's very cold (-17 Celsius with the windchill last night) so the streets and the restaurant were basically empty.
So Perry played all our favourite songs and we sang along. We danced. We laughed. It was a perfect evening.
Perry knows my favourite songs and two of them, maybe the top two, the ones I play over and over again when I'm sad, are the Tennessee Watlz (Holly Cole's wonderful version) and You Belong to me (by the great Patsy Cline). Perry always does his research and so he checked on both of these songs and told me last night that they were both written by the same writing duo. I thought about this for a while and realized that it made perfect sense.
Tennessee Waltz was written in 1948 and You Belong to Me in 1952 by Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart. What strikes me, what probably captured me about both these things, were the lyrics. I love them, love the stories they tell, love the rhythm of them, love the way the music - the wonderful lyrical sweet music - bolsters the lyrics.
And now I'll treausre them even more, knowing that Perry checked this out for me, and knowing that these two songs belong together in a way I hadn't imagined.
